Since commencing business in 1996, Intercity Xpress's safety record has been exemplary. We have never experienced a loss of life or serious injury to any of our passengers as a result of our negligence.We are convinced that the risk of accidents can be minimised by maintaining rigid fleet controls and by conducting professional maintenance and driver training programmes, and that continuous efforts towards improvement should always be a priority.In this regard, a brief outlay of our long established fleet maintenance and driver training programmes is provided below.
1. Maintenance of vehicles
- All Intercity Xpress Coaches are subject to an annual major service which coincides with the mandatory certificate of fitness check. The duration of this service is on average ten working days, and consists of a 195 point checklist.
- Coaches are also comprehensively serviced according to manufacturers' kilometre interval specifications, and consists of a 247 point checklist.
- At least twice per month, or prior to every long trip, coaches are subjected to a 120 point safety inspection.
- Prior to every trip, the driver conducts a 70 point pre-trip inspection of the coach.
- A tyre management system is in place that includes the checking of tyre conditions and pressures at least once a week.
2. Training
Drivers are formally trained and retained according to the following modules
- Introduction to professional driving.
- Principles of economic driving.
- Pre-trip vehicle inspections.
- Mechanical appreciation.
- Tyre management.
- Road signs and road legislation.
- Basic vehicle handling.
- The principles of defensive driving.
- Accident prevention.
- Town /City vehicle handling.
- Etiquette.
- Public relations.
- Conflict management.
- Personal grooming.
The duration of the programme is 12 days and upon completion of the course, drivers undergo a written examination and a driving test. If a certain percentage is achieved, a diploma of competence is awarded to each driver.Refresher courses are conducted on a continuous basis, or when specific circumstances require the re-training of a driver.
3. Discipline
A strict disciplinary code is issued to all drivers and comprehensively discussed and communicated with them from time to time. In particular, the use of alcohol/drugs is totally prohibited, and any indication of positive blood alcohol content whilst on duty qualifies an employee for dismissal. In this regard frequent and random tests are conducted on drivers.
4. Insurance
In addition to out existing insurance policy which includes passenger liability cover of R100 million per incident, Intercity Xpress has since early 1998 offered an emergency medical response 911 type service on all luxury vehicles (as provided by Euroassistance), free of charge to clients.
